Chris Levant has not made one roster move since taking over as the new General Manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. "I believe that we have a young and talented nucleus on both sides of the ball that is capable of winning many games", he was quoted as saying during a recent interview with the local media. He may just have a point. RF Justin Upton is one of the best young talents in the game. Despite being just 23 years of age, Upton is a hitter that you must plan around. He is coming off a down season, but is motivated to make up for it this year. Under control for six more seasons, Upton will be around for the foreseeable future. Joining him in the lineup are Chris Young, Stephen Drew, Kelly Johnson, and Miguel Montero, who are all under the age of 30, to go along with veterans Melvin Mora and Russell Branyon. Ryan Roberts will also get plenty of opportunities to prove his worth. Xavier Nady and Gerardo Parro will be the main pieces off the bench.
The pitching staff also boasts young talent in the form of Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson in the rotation and Kam Mickolio and Joe Paterson in the bullpen. The staff will also benefit from the veteran presesnce of JJ Putz, Joe Saunders, and he of the perfect game that wasn't, Armando Galarraga.
There is also up and coming talent in the minors. Levant stated that he is very eager to see what SP Jarrod Parker and slugging 1B Brandon Allen will do once they make it to the ML level. "Those guys, without a doubt, will be major contributors." It'll be interesting to see if this optimism becomes reality.
